This student has studied under the Korean curriculum since grade 1. Although she has been going to English academies, she felt that the knowledge and skills she possessed were not enough to secure her a spot at the international school she dreamed of going to. She also needed help with improving her grammar and vocabulary skills so that she can earn high marks on the Duolingo English Test (DET), which is a testing requirement that is becoming an increasingly popular assessment tool for admissions officers who want a holistic assessment of an individual's natural English skills. She was offered a personalized study plan for the DET. She was trained on all four areas: literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production. The study routine required her to read multiple texts with blanks for her to fill in. She also had to __select the main idea, assign a title, locate evidence, and make reasonable inferences. In addition, she listened to various types of audio files which required her to write sentences down verbatim, respond appropriately to the questions asked, and discern real English words from fake ones. The greatest challenge she had to overcome was her low production score, primarily because she could not produce an sufficient amount of text under limited time conditions. To address this issue, she was given a writing template to memorize and strategies to apply so that she can write faster. Her typing speed was another problem. She was given training on how to boost her typing speed. This brought her wpm from 10 to 40. Once she became comfortable with typing out her responses, she went through DET practice tests. After each test, she was given real-time feedback from__ the teacher on how to improve.Through perseverance and hard work, she scored well above the DET score required by and was accepted to her dream school.
