This student was in elementary school, applying for an international middle school. He studied in the school for only 1 week, for an intense ¡°crash course¡± in interview preparation. He is a hardworking student with good English and Maths skills, but he didn¡¯t understand what he needed to do to best demonstrate those skills to the school.
+ Personalized Lessons
I had one lesson with this student before he had three more with other teachers. All three of us worked on his core English skills, but we each focused on different skills to give him the most focused lessons possible.
In my lesson, we covered reading, vocabulary, and writing as core skills but then focused on Interview and Maths as my specialities. As we had a short time, I focused on high-impact skills. These were firstly how to extend his answers to questions from a simple ¡°fact answer¡± to long interesting ¡°conversational answers¡± and secondly I gave him vocabulary sheets to help with all the Mathematical terms in English.
+ Challenge & Achievements
He had made errors in all parts of our lesson, having issues with vocabulary and misunderstanding what questions and answers meant. I advised him to try and rephrase everything in his own words, this helped him notice when he hadn¡¯t fully understood something and also helped him realise how answers and questions were related.
I saw quick improvement in every skill we worked on during the lesson, he worked hard and focused on trying to really use the tutoring as best he could. I am not at all surprised that he got into his school of choice and I am certain that, if he continues to apply himself like this, he will succeed even more in the future.
