This student is a middle school student who has studied with us for five weeks, with the goalof entering the boarding school. She was very introverted and seemed to get nervous easily. Although her English skills were below average, she was able to follow instructions and worked hard towards her goal. Her comprehension was good, and she understood what was being asked of her. Her introversion lead to her speaking softly, her diction needed working on, and her descriptions were often too short for the standard to which she was aiming. In order to get into the school of her choice, the student needed to score well on the Duolingo English Test. This required answering many different types of questions digitally, across multiple English skills. We used mock tests to direct her learning, assessing which areas she had scored well in, and which needed improvement. We then went through both the content and the format of the questions she had scored lowly on, teaching her how to improve heranswers. This process was then iterated, going back to a mock test, and then reviewing, steadily improving her skills and score.Due to the nature of the test, the student needed her speaking skills to not only be sufficientfor a conversation with an English speaker, but also clear enough for a computer recordingto be understood by a machine. To this end, we worked on both her diction, highlighting thedifferences between Korean and English phonics, and on her volume and confidence. We also improved her vocabulary, having dedicated time each week to both learning newwords, and reading skills. This aided in her ability to both interpret questions and to give more expansive answers. She had room for improvement, and the combined efforts of the student and the tutorsresulted in success. She was accepted into the one school she applied to. The student was determined to succeed throughout her journey with us. We hope she will one day show the world what she can do.
