This student had been learning under my teachings for about 6 months.Due to his unforeseen event, we had to quickly prepare for hisadmissions tests and interview. While this student was quite capable in English, he was not sufficiently experienced in writing essaysand interviews. Therefore, we shifted our focus into making sure he understood the basics of writing asound essay and performing well in interviews. We took a diverse approach towards preparing for the interview. Our first priority was to make sure the student was able to answer the basic questions (Self-introduction, hobbies, etc.)without any problems. Although the student¡¯s overall speaking abilities were good, his shy naturemade it hard for him to express his thoughts coherently. Therefore, we ran several simulations in classallowing him to acclimate to the tension and unpredictable nature of interviews. The student did not have any major grammatical problems but was lacking greatly in hisunderstanding of how an essay should be formulated. We had to start from the basics of what thestructure was and what elements needed to be present in each area. For instance, he learned that a clear topic sentence should always be present in the introduction to help narrow down his focus. With enough practice, the student was able to greatly improve his writing capabilities within a short frameof time. To prepare for the MAP test and reading based questions, we mainly used theIXL program, Vocabulary book, and Reading book. Having a sufficient level of vocabulary is critical intaking MAP tests and other reading-based questions. This is precisely why we always had adedicated time during class for vocab tests and writing of words in sample sentences. This greatlyincreased the students understanding of how the words he memorized should actually be used inwriting. We were also able to solve several reading-based questions ranging from identifying the mainpurpose of the passage to inference questions.Although this student was well-rounded in his English abilities, we still had quite a challenge ahead ofus to allow him to comfortably pass the admission tests. However, the student was extremelymotivated to pass the exams and was diligent in hi studies. With the right guidance and hard work, the student was able to pass the International School that he wanted to go.
