He had sufficient background knowledge in maths and sciences but need to work on his grammar and writing skills. He had about five weeks to prepare for his entrance exam and interview. This meant that he needed a flexible yet robust study plan tailored to improving his weaknesses. Thus, finding areas of improvement and nailing them down were essential to the learning process. We employed a comprehensive, personalized study plan that focused on language arts, mathematics, and sciences (with a greater weight on language arts). We went over grammar and essay writing skills. We also made sure that he understood how to write essays with clarity and conciseness befitting a good writer. In addition, we pored over multiple reading passages that were challenging to students of his age because we wanted him to be competitive. As for mathematics, various concepts were divided into algebra, geometry, and statistics. Since he had done some advance study in Korean math, we helped him translate Korean math terms into English. We also made sure he knew the essential math concepts by heart. He was especially interested in science. He seemed to have had a natural curiosity for space science. He wanted to know what the Korean scientific terms were called in English. Once taught, he tried to summarize scientific concepts using the new words he learned in English. Because so much had to be learned in a very tight time window, he had to do a lot of the heavy lifting by digesting a significant amount of homework. He persevered through it all and made sure all questions were answered to the best of his knowledge. When he made mistakes, we made sure that he understood what and why he had gotten wrong and how to fix them. After each lesson, he used a question bank through which he reinforced his understanding of newly learned concepts. Through hard work and perseverance, he proved himself worthy of a place at the British International School.
