This student had a clear goal in mind: get into a top 50 US university.
Despite challenges he faced in his academic life, he knew that the right thing to do as a student is to persist and study hard and become a productive person.
His personalized study plan was aimed at improving his GPA. Because communication skills are very important to be successful in the English B (HL) course, the class was conducted in English as much as possible. He actually liked sharing his thoughts, so his communication skills improved over time. He did need a lot of help with writing, so he was taught advanced writing skills to bring his writing skills to the next level.
Perhaps the most challenging part was writing the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essays and the extended essay (EE). For TOK essays, he needed a new, creative way of thinking that is unlike any thought process that is conventionally taught in Korean schools. He was challenged to think deeper and create make insightful comments.
As for the EE, he chose the military coup in Medieval Korea as his topic because he loved history.
We went through numerous primary and secondary sources together and compiled them into a coherent whole.
